June 11, 2025 OMT Treatment

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment or OMT has been shown to benefit mobility and blood flow, reduce pain, and promote healing. OMT can be used alone to reduce symptoms or along with other medical treatments. At Infinity Medical Clinic, we encourage patients to consider this noninvasive method for treating pain caused by common conditions, including back pain, migraines, menstrual pain, and concussions.

Back Pain

Almost everyone experiences back pain at some point, and neck pain is becoming incredibly common due to the use of mobile devices. OMT can address musculoskeletal issues affecting the spine and the many muscles that attach to it. Low back pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, and neck pain can all be traced to the spine. Through gentle pressure on pressure points and stretching/massage of tight muscles and fascia—the tissue covering the muscles—OMT can restore mobility. OMT for back pain involves a physical evaluation and hands-on manipulation.

Menstrual Pain

When period cramps become unbearable or seem to last forever, OMT can be an effective, drug-free treatment. Focusing light pressure and manipulation on the lower back can relieve the intensity and duration of cramps and promote healthy function in the pelvic area.

Concussions

Whether from kids playing sports or falling at home, accidents happen and concussions may result. Any head injury or concussion should be treated as soon as possible to identify its severity and address symptoms from inflammation. Cranial OMT can facilitate healing by improving circulation with the result of reduced inflammation. Chronic concussion symptoms may also benefit from OMT, as the treatments loosen tight muscles and fascia on and around the cranium and neck.

Migraines

Migraines can cause such excruciating pain that you can’t work or enjoy life. When migraines force you to change your plans, it is time to seek treatment, and OMT is a noninvasive method for migraine relief. Applying OMT on the head, neck and shoulders can increase blood flow to the area and reduce tension. The tissue and joint work can also address musculoskeletal issues that may contribute to headaches and migraines. If you experience migraines, we encourage you to reach out to Dr. Stemmerman at Infinity Medical Clinic for a migraine treatment plan.

If you’d like to learn more about how OMT can help you, see our recent blog post. When you’re ready to get your life back and try a gentle, drug-free pain relief method, contact Dr. Stemmerman about OMT.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, also known as OMT, is a hands-on treatment for relieving pain, especially migraines, concussions, and menstrual pain. If one of your goals is to avoid pain medications and the many unpleasant side effects, OMT is an attractive treatment option. It is gentle, natural, and non-invasive, and it can be helpful in increasing mobility in stiff muscles, managing headaches, and improving circulation.

Candidates for Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment

OMT is a drug-free system created to restore harmonious function of the muscles, bones, and nerves. OMT may be a good drug-free option for people who experience:

  • Migraines
  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Menstrual pain
  • Concussions

Relieving Headaches and Cramps

Infinity Medical Clinic’s Larae Stemmerman is a Doctor of Osteopathy who has been practicing OMT for 25+ years. She has found that many people who experience painful migraines and menstrual cramps have good results from the gentle massage, stretching, and resistance of OMT. OMT moves joints and muscles to release tightness and allow your body to work as it should.

Her treatment begins with a complete physical examination to develop a personalized treatment plan. OMT can be used along with medications if necessary.

OMT for Concussions and Post-Concussive Syndrome

Concussions are a type of brain injury that can occur from accidents, falls, and sports activities. If someone takes a blow to the head, the force may result in a concussion as well as neck pain. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, fatigue, vision issues, and increased sensitivity. If you suspect a concussion following a car accident or sports collision, seek medical attention as soon as possible and monitor symptoms for at least 48 hours.

OMT can help relieve the symptoms of concussion by addressing tension in the cranium and neck. Gentle pressure on various bones, muscles, and fascia facilitates blood flow and promotes healing and feels good.

Other Ways OMT Can Help You

People who are sensitive to pain medications can benefit from the natural relief of OMT. OMT provides manual relief of muscular pain in the neck, back, hips, shoulders, and other regions. If you regularly take ibuprofen or other pain relievers for body aches, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment may be able to reduce your intake, which can enhance your quality of life.

It’s no secret that doctors frequently recommend exercise for patients who are experiencing depression and anxiety. But why? What is it about physical movement that helps us mentally and emotionally? Research has demonstrated that physical activity helps improve mood and decreases sleep complaints. In short, when you move your body, it releases endorphins—the feel-good chemicals that are just waiting to be set free. Aerobic exercise raises your heart rate and core body temperature—it is especially good at releasing endorphins.

Spinal health continues to be one of the most important aspects of your wellbeing. Millions of people experience neck and back pain every day. According to Georgetown University’s Health Policy Institute, back pain is a leading cause of work limitations and one of the costliest conditions in the U.S. People miss work, lose income, and experience pain, which are all great reasons to practice good body mechanics at work and at home.

Is your child ready to participate in sports at school? If so, he or she will need a sports physical, also called an athletic physical or school physical. Marion and Cedar Rapids area school districts require sports physicals in order to identify medical history and any physical issues that could affect sports activities.
